Comerciantes e missionários portugueses chegaram a Timor por barco nos anos de 1500.

Portugal consolidou o seu poder na parte leste de Timor nos anos de 1800. Os timorenses sublevaram-se algumas vezes.

Dom Boaventura, liurai de Manufahi, chefiou a última e a maior delas, mas foi derrotado em 1912.

Durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial, Portugal retirou-se de Timor. Muitos timorenses morreram devido aos recontros entre as tropas japonesas e australianas.

Austrália manteve um consulado em Díli até 1971. A liberdade em Timor-Leste era limitada porque Portugal vivia sob ditadura.

Portugal memusatkan kontrolnya di bagian timur Timor pada 1800an. Sejumlah pemberontakan muncul di Timor. Dom Boaventura, liurai (kepala suku) Manufahi, memimpin gerakan terbesar dan yang terakhir. Namun ia dikalahkan oleh Portugis pada 1912.

Portugal menarik diri dari Timor ketika Perang Dunia II meletus. Banyak warga Timor tewas dalam pertempuran antara pasukan Jepang dan Australia.

Australia memiliki konsulat di Dili hingga 1971. Timor-Leste memiliki kebebasan yang sangat terbatas karena Portugal dipimpin oleh seorang diktator.

Portuguese Colonialism in Timor-Leste

Portuguese merchants and missionaries arrived in Timor by ship in the 1500s.

Portugal consolidated its control over the eastern part of Timor in the 1800s. A number of Timorese rebellions occurred. Dom Boaventura, the liurai of Manufahi, led the last and largest of those but was defeated in 1912.

During World War II Portugal withdrew from Timor . Many Timorese died as a result of fighting between Japanese and Australian troops.

Australia had a consulate in Dili until 1971. Timor-Leste had few freedoms because Portugal was ruled by a dictatorship.
